What Is Cupping?

Cupping is a therapy that originated in China and is commonly used today. This therapy method involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. The cups are used to help healing and increase blood flow. Many believe that cupping therapy helps balance the negative and positive in our bodies, and this can help reduce pain, increase blood flow, and help our bodies fight off pathogens.

What Are the Benefits of Cupping?

Cupping helps to increase blood circulation where the cups are placed. The cups relieve muscle tension, and improves blood flow. Cupping also helps to promote cell repair, and may help to connect new blood vessels in the tissues where the cups are placed.

How Does Cupping Work?

When cupping treatment is done, a cup is placed onto the skin. The cup is heated, and suctioned onto the skin. When the cup is heated the air inside the cup begins to cool, and this creates a vacuum. The vacuum draws the skin into the cup. Cups are usually placed for five to ten minutes, and you may experience mild bruising or redness around the areas where the cups were placed.

What Can Cupping Treat?

Cupping can help with many conditions, and especially can help with muscle pains or aches. Other conditions cupping may help with are listed below.

  • Digestive issues

  • Pain or muscle aches

Are There Any Side Effects?

Cupping is safe and there are not many side effects. After your cupping treatment you may feel sweaty or nauseous. The area where the cups were placed on your skin may be marked with a circle from the cup. You may notice bruising or redness around the areas, but this should subside. Cupping is not recommended if you have a sunburn, a wound, or a skin ulcer. If you take blood-thinning medication you should not use cupping as a treatment method.
