What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels can help to rejuvenate your skin and give you a youthful glow. There are many types of peels on the market, and choosing the right peel is important. Chemical peels are applied topically, and cause your skin to shed skin cells. This results in exposing new layers of skin, and creates a fresh and smooth texture.

Chemical peels can help to remove damage from the sun, acne scarring, or pigmentation issues. Peels can also help battle the signs of aging, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. There are different chemical peels available, and they differ by the level of strength and duration of the treatment. Typically, chemical peels are categorized by superficial, medium, or deep penetrating, and this depends on the PH level of the peel, and active ingredients.

Light Peel or Superficial

This type of peel is the lightest peel you can get. Most often this peel is made of alpha or beta hydroxy acids. They can also contain glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid. Superficial peels remove the top layer of the skin or epidermis. The results are slight, and this type of peel is perfect to treat minimal signs of aging, acne scars, or sun damage. Most people can notice improvements once they have completed multiple peel treatments.

Superficial peels are gentle compared to other options, and during the peel you may only feel a slight tingling or burning sensation. Recovery is minimal, and you can return to your normal routine directly after. Your skin may be slightly red afterwards, but this will diminish after a day or two.

Medium Strength Peels

Medium strength peels can help produce a more dramatic result, and may contain trichloroacetic acid or TCA. This acid helps to really penetrate the skin layers below the epidermis. Medium peels can help treat moderate wrinkles, sun damage, and pigmentation.

During a medium strength peel treatment, you may notice minor burning or stinging, and the discomfort should subside around 30 minutes to an hour after the treatment is complete. This strength level will cause your skin to peel, and you may notice redness or swollen areas on your face. If you choose this peel, plan for a about a week of recovery time while your skin heals.

Deep Level Peels

Deep level peels are great for people who have deep lines or wrinkles, or moderate sun damage. This peel is also great for treating moderate pigmentation, and can give you smooth and youthful looking skin. Deep level peels are the strongest type of peel you can get, and this peel can give you amazing results. Deep peels contain carbolic acid or TCA, and both of these can really penetrate the skin to reach the deep layers of the dermis.

If you choose this type of peel plan for moderate pain, and a recovery that takes a few months. After a deep peel your skin will be red and swollen, and you may feel tight or itchy as the skin heals. Scabs may develop, but will disappear and you skin will be rejuvenated, smooth, and youthful.

Which Peel Is Right for Me?

When choosing a peel take a look at the condition of your skin, and evaluate your problem areas. Look at any pigmentation issues, sun damage, or wrinkles, and determine how strong you want the peel to be. Peels should always be done carefully, and you should plan for healing time afterwards. Overall, peels are a great way to rejuvenate your skin, and battle the signs of aging.

What To Expect During a Chemical Peel?

Before your chemical peel you should have clean skin, and stop using any skin care products at least a week before your treatment. Chemical peels usually take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, and this depends on the strength of the peel. Skin should be prepped and cleansed, and the peel solution is then applied to your skin using a brush or sponge. Once the solution is applied, you may start to feel a burning or stinging sensation. Each peel has different instructions regarding how long to leave the peel on for, and this depends on the type of peel you choose. It may help to blow air on your face during the wait time, and once the peel is removed you can apply a cold compress to help sooth your skin.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

The length of the recovery depends on the strength of the peel. Mild treatments may only produce redness that lasts a few days or a week. If you choose a medium or deep peel you will notice more swelling or redness, and your skin will begin to peel or scab. Skin ointment can be used to sooth your skin during recovery. You should avoid the sun, and keep all makeup and other products off of your face during healing.
